The Sabah Creative Economy & Innovation Centre (SCENIC) is an initiative of the Sabah State Government, which received approval from the Sabah Cabinet in August 2019.

SCENIC operates under the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah (KPSTI), with the objective of accelerating industrial development in Sabah through the adoption of technology, innovation, and creativity, as well as strategic collaboration with various stakeholders across the ecosystem.

SCENIC’s capacity-building initiatives are anchored on three (3) core pillars: Innovation-Driven Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Creativity.

  • Approved by the Sabah Cabinet and placed under the Ministry of Industrial Development (MID).

2020

2020

  • SCENIC officially began operations.
  • Navigated early challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, political changes, and limited funding.
  • MyHackathon 2020, in collaboration with Cradle, saw two Sabah-based startups become the first recipients of RM250,000 in grants.

  • Became Malaysia’s first accredited Toon Boom Training Centre.
  • Officially placed under the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah (KPSTI) in June.
  • Began early discussions on bringing the Digital and IoT Sandbox to Sabah.

  • Launched the Digital and IoT Sandbox.
  • Organised Sabah’s first Social Enterprise Summit.
  • Launched SCENIC Creative Academy.
  • Established the SCENIC Headquarters.
  • Received the Most Impactful Public Agency in Driving Digital Adoption 2022 award.

  • SCENIC was invited to share its work and experience on international platforms in the Netherlands, Scotland, France, and the United Kingdom.
  • Launched the Kempen Masuk Sandbox initiative.

  • Recognised as Malaysia’s second-largest social enterprise ecosystem.
  • Recognised as Malaysia’s sixth-largest technology ecosystem.
2025

2025

  • Established as a key reference point for local and global government collaboration in talent development.
  • Hosted the 1st Creative Economy Summit in April 2025.
  • Hosted the Rural Social Enterprise Gathering (RSEG), Asia’s first global gathering of rural social entrepreneurs.
Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC) merupakan satu inisiatif di bawah Kerajaan Negeri Sabah yang telah diluluskan oleh Kabinet Sabah pada Ogos 2019.

SCENIC berada di bawah seliaan Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi Sabah (KSTI) dengan tujuan untuk mempercepatkan pembangunan industri di Sabah melalui teknologi, inovasi dan kreativiti, serta kerjasama strategik bersama pelbagai pihak berkepentingan dalam ekosistem.
